The Stat That Reveals Arsenal Would Have Won Premier League League If Refs Did Their Jobs Properly

Arsene Wenger-led Arsenal had to settle for a second-placed finish this season - their best in the past 10years. They lost out to champions Leicester City by 10 points despite being the only club to overcome the foxes over two legs.

However, an analysis, by a panel of experts at Sun Sport has revealed what the Premier League table would have looked like if the referees got all their calls absolutely correct during the term.

All 380 league matches played this season were analysed to determine key penalty calls that went both for and against teams, as well as goals which should and should not have counted.
Chelsea, sadly, would have still ended up outside of the top six. Mistakes only cost them three points over the season, and they would only be able to manage an 8th place finish if the decisions were correct.

Refereeing mistakes were claimed to have been made in 96 games. That is around one in every four. Of the 96 considered mistakes, 53 sent the results in the wrong direction.

The Analysis also revealed that neither Manchester United nor Manchester City should have made it into the top five, while Leicester should have finished in second, two points adrift should-be champions, Arsenal.

Southampton would have actually finished in third, and Spurs would have ended their campaign one spot lower in fourth place.

On the other end of the table, Newcastle appear to have been the most unfortunate, as the study also showed that they should have finished in 14th place, with Sam Allardyce-led Sunderland heading for the Championship instead.

Leicester are understood to have been a huge beneficiary, getting more than the deserved amount of big calls. They gained 12 points from mistakes, although they were robbed of a win against Southampton at one point.

Arsenal, meanwhile, only lost two points through incorrect decisions. Aaron Ramsey's goal against Liverpool, which was struck off, should have stood. The Gunners would have won that match 1-0.

Chelsea, sadly, would have still ended up outside of the top six. Mistakes only cost them three points over the season, and the best they would have been able to achieve was an eighth-place finish if the decisions were a 100% correct.
