Louis van Gaal calls out United legends, accuses them of stabbing him in the back

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has fired shots at the club's legends for the part he feels they have played in birthing criticism from supporters towards him and his team, reports the Mail Online.

The Dutchman has endured an indifferent season, having failed to mount a credible title charge and exiting the Champions League at the group stage, despite spending upwards of
£250m on new players in the summer. The criticism has continued despite the fact the team do have an FA Cup final to look forward to next Saturday.

However, their league form is of more concern to them, with the final Premier League fixture list of the season set to see United needing to win at home to AFC Bournemouth as they hope that Manchester City lose at Swansea for the Red Devils to qualify for next season's much coveted Champions League.

But the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager is still bullish despite coming under incessant attacks from former players and media most especially. ex-midfield maestro, Paul Scholes who has been the most vocal critics, labelling the team's performance under the tutelage of Van Gaal as a ‘shambles’ and ‘disaster’ at various stages of the season.

Scholes who claimed a remarkable 11 Premier League titles and the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson, said as early as October that the Dutchman's style of play would have left him ‘tearing his hair out.’

But Van Gaal shot back saying: "In spite of the attacks of the media – and not only the media, the legends and other kinds of people – I am here and I am fighting, I am an open book.

"And I believe in myself, I believe in Manchester, I believe in the players. I hope that everybody is believing like me, then it is much more easier.

"When you have expectations that Manchester United has to be champions, then you’re disappointed. But when we qualify ourselves or win a title, I am satisfied. But in the eyes of some fans, or many fans, that’s not enough because you have to win the title.

"I have the impression that I will still be here, otherwise I can’t say all the things that I have said. But in the football world, you never know, and I have seen that before."
