SIX tournament knockout wins in 50yrs, ZERO 90mins win in a knockout game. Stats that show how bad England have been since THAT world cup

England have been sent packing from France at the hands of an Iceland team made up of journeymen and led by an unfancied coach who's day job is as a dentist.

Their media has really done them good. Making them seem very relevant as one of the top teams in the game. I mean, how are they ranked 11th in the latest FIFA ranking? By the time you are done with this article, you would understand why I ask.

Well all know its been bad for England but I doubt we would have put this low figure to it. England have won just SIX knockout games since 1966 in international football. Yes SIX GAMES.
Those games are Paraguay in 1986, Belgium and Cameroon in 1990, Spain in 1996, Denmark in 2002 and Ecuador in 2006.

One of those was on penalties and another was a last-minute winner.

It really doesn't paint the Three Lions in a brilliant light in the past half decade of international football. It is indeed a terrible record since they won the World Cup 50 years ago.

But it gets worse. The fact that they have won just four of their last 15 games in major tournaments and have NEVER won a Euros knockout game outright. That win over Spain in 1996 on penalties was their only ever European Championships knockout win.

Other than that, it's defeats by Yugoslavia (1968), Germany (1996 on pens), Portugal (2004 on pens) and Italy (2012 on pens).

Someone blamed it on English players being overpaid and over-pampered, do you agree? If that is the case then was the men-of-steel generation of Frank Lampard, Stevie Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry also pampered?
