COPA America: USA lose 3rd place play-off vs Colombia in emotional game that saw the game end 10-man a-side

USA finish their Copa America campaign on a losing note, after Carlos Bacca’s first-half goal gives Colombia a 1-0 win in Phoenix.

It was a decent game, as third-placed playoff games go, unfortunately for USA, they were the unlucky side to lose tooday having done OK. Colombia on heir part put together a piece of quality football, and that was the difference. They were the better side with little difference with Real Madrid's James Rodriguez the game’s best player.

For the 31st minute goal, Cuadrado did really well to control a difficult ball on the touchline, and found James on the edge of the box. The Colombia captain then scooped a delicious insightful forward lob into the path of Arias, charging up from full-back, and he headed it across the box, where Carlos Bacca slid in to score from four yards. Lovely, incisive attacking move: they sliced USA open there.

With the clock running dowm, things got a little bit heated up as USA's Orozco and Colombia's Arias were given their marching orders after getting booked by the ref in the 90th minute. The pair clashed with just a little over 90 seconds on the clock. Orozco walked for shoving Arias in the face while the Colombian took one for putting his head into Orozco’s face.

The huge number of Colombian fans in the stands would have done little to calm the atmosphere too.

Argentina play Chile by 1am Monday (Nigeria, UK time), at the MetLife Stadium, New Jersey in the final. It will be a repeat of last year's final in which Chile won. That 4-1 penalty win remains, the only win Chile have had over Argentina in 5 encounters (the rest all losses).
